Article

I found this article interesting. A mother let her 9 year old boy ride the subway alone. This caused a big frenzy among people. But why? Children used to go out on their own a lot in the past and people didn't think much of it. Are children in this age way too overprotected? Do parents live in more fear than in past generations? To quote a line from the article "Part of the problem is that with wall-to-wall Internet and cable news, every missing child case gets so much airtime that it's not surprising even normal parental paranoia can be amplified." I think we live in a very paranoid time.

latchkey children were everywhere! Often 9 year olds would help take care of younger siblings too.

I think we have stripped away giving them responsiblity because we don't find adults to be trustworthy. Therefore, I think children are less responsible. People try to shelter their kids out of fear.ds
