Smoking Update

The smoking ban was passed and will take effect in May. It has been watered down a little bit so that it isn't quite as strict. On the news, they were interviewing people on the streets about what they thought. Non-smokers thought it was great. And smokers said that Burbank is being a dictatorship taking away yet another one of their rights. But why don't smokers realize that when their rights infringe on other people's rights, then it's no longer just about them anymore.

Not sure what the law was watered down to, but from a non-smokers point of view, I think it is infringing on smokers rights. Like it or not, they have the right to choose to smoke, so we have to allow them to do so outside. Are they saying this is a public health issue?? How can they... considering non-smokers probably breath as much bad air from car exhaust as from a smoker walking by.

I love your last sentence. I was coming home from work today and sitting in gridlock downtown. The car infront of me was smoking up a storm on their cancer stick and I was choking over the smell. It definitely infringed upon me. IF they want to kill themselves then fine. However, I don't want to die as well because of them.

You are not going to die because of breathing cigarette smoke outside. It's just not going to happen. Secondhand smoke when you're inside an enclosed area is one thing, but the car exhaust of your own car is much more harmful to you and the environment than the cigarette that person was smoking.

And if you don't like the smell, that's fine (I don't like it either), but that's not an infringement on your rights. There is no right to be free from smelly things, much as I wish there was.

Ok then how about this.... Why can't smokers be a little more aware of the fact that many people around them are really bothered by their smoking? So even though they Can smoke, they should have some consideration of others too.

Now THAT is something I agree with. The litter is what gets me the most. Smokers seem to think that cigarettes aren't litter, and they also don't realize that they're holding a little stick of fire in their fingers.
